A807 Active Travel Project - FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions

Based on our experience on similar projects, we have outlined our response to frequently asked questions below. As the project progresses, we will update this section to reflect your frequently asked questions.

What is the purpose of this project?

East Dunbartonshire Council is looking to increase the number of active travel journeys in the area by making it safer and more enjoyable to travel by walking, wheeling and cycling between Torrance and Milngavie, as well as provide onward connections to Bearsden, Bishopbriggs and beyond.

How will this project benefit the residents, commuters and businesses in the area?

The route will be designed to foster a safer and attractive setting for walking, wheeling and cycling. This will improve the experience for current and future active travel users in the area who undertake journeys between Torrance and Milngavie.

Who is responsible for this project?

The project is being developed by East Dunbartonshire Council.

How will this project be funded?

The funding for the feasibility study was provided by Transport Scotland and the current design work is being funded by Transport Scotland as well as Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT). It is anticipated that the funding for the construction of the corridor will be supported by external funding.

What is the decision-making process for agreeing the project outcomes?

East Dunbartonshire Council’s Place, Neighbourhood and Corporate Assets Committee will have overall responsibility to approve the necessary reports required for construction. However, the decision-making process will also be driven by:

  • Feedback from the local community and key stakeholders;
  • Objectives and themes from national and local policies and strategies; and
  • The current conditions and trends in the local area.

What work has been done to date?

In 2022, East Dunbartonshire Council procured Sweco to undertake a feasibility study assessing two routes: one along the A807 corridor and one away from the A807 carriageway, along the northern bank of the River Kelvin before meeting the Allander Walkway. However, the constraints associated with the route along the River Kelvin deemed it unfeasible. Since 2022, a significant volume of technical work has been undertaken by Sweco to assess the constraints and possible improvements along the A807. From this, and in partnership with East Dunbartonshire Council, a concept design has been developed, which is now ready for the public to provide their feedback on. This will help refine the design to ensure it meets the community's needs.

Are all the proposed improvements going to be put in place?

Plans are not final at this stage and are subject to change, for example due to available funding, environmental considerations or landownership reasons. However, through the ongoing community engagement process, your views will shape the final improvements put in place.

When will the construction of A807 Active Travel Corridor take place?

The start date of construction is dependent on several processes being completed. These include:

  • Responses to the consultation;
  • Ground investigations;
  • Ecology assessments;
  • Landowner agreements;
  • Completion of detailed design works and construction package;
  • Gaining planning consent;
  • Securing funding; and
  • Statutory processes being followed for Traffic Regulation Order and Redetermination Orders.

While considering the above factors, the Council’s ambition is to start constructing parts of Section 1 in 2024/25.

I occupy a property/unit within the area, what does this mean for me?

We are committed to developing a project that demonstrates what you would like to see in the area. As such, everyone in the local community is invited to complete the survey and / or attend one of our drop-in events so that we can capture your views on active travel and the proposed improvements.

Who can I speak to if I have a question about the project or require assistance?
