Environmental Improvements

Back to Index

4.1.60     The Council recognises that there are areas in East Dunbartonshire which would benefit from environmental improvement. The Council will continue to pursue its objective of seeking the rehabilitation of vacant, derelict and degraded sites (particularly those which have been so for a long time) in partnership with Scottish Enterprise Dunbartonshire and other agencies, with the ultimate intention of eliminating all features that detract from the wider environmental quality.

4.1.61     This approach supports the Council’s policies which promote the re-use of brownfield sites in preference to greenfield sites. The improvement of sites which detract from the environment and amenity of the area will also make East Dunbartonshire more attractive for economic investment.

4.1.62     The Council maintains a register of land recognised as being vacant or derelict.  The register identifies the Council’s preferred use for such sites and whether they have been identified for environmental improvement in terms of policy DQ 15 below, or for built development (for mixed uses, housing or business) as identified elsewhere in this Plan.  The definitions of ‘vacant’ and ‘derelict’ are given in the glossary.  It must be noted, however, that these terms do not include amenity or recreational land and the policy does not, therefore, give any encouragement to the development of such land.

DQ 15  Sites Requiring Environmental Improvements

The Council will encourage and support environmental improvements throughout East Dunbartonshire, particularly to improve vacant and derelict sites, and thereafter to positively manage them.

The Council will seek to work with Scottish Enterprise Dunbartonshire to develop and implement a Derelict Land Strategy.

The sites listed below are particularly highlighted as being in need of environmental improvement and/or positive management for environmental or community use. The Council is particularly keen to see these sites improved but it is recognised that successful initiatives will be dependent on both private sector and Council support. The continued support from Scottish Enterprise Dunbartonshire (SED) is also sought.
